Hey Parenting People!
You probably won't be surprised to hear that most of my clients are pumped to get lots of ideas for consequences when we start our work. Their kids’ misbehavior feels like an impossible game of whack-A-mole and with the right hammer for every misbehavior, they’ll win in no time, right?
Whelp, that ain’t happening. Winning at whack-A-mole is less about how many hammers you have, and more about how you swing the one you’ve got. So, you will NOT get a big list of consequences from me.
In fact, in our first month, you’re probably going to have LESS consequences to work with than you do now! To be specific, you will have one, and only one consequence in your arsenal.
Here’s the thing - I care WAY more about how you’re giving your consequences than what your consequences are. The energy, tone, timing and words in your delivery have a greater impact on your child’s behavior than anything else. So, when we first begin, you’ll have one catchall consequence. No more wasting brainpower wondering what consequence to use. You’ll stop worrying about what the consequence is, and use your energy to improve HOW you give it. You’ll focus on your one magical, shiny goal:
Immediate, calm consequences without lecturing, anger or shame
Your first month is about turning yourself into a peaceful consequence ninja and that’s plenty, trust me.
When we stop distracting ourselves with consequence engineering, we begin to understand WHY it’s hard to respond better to our kids. We realize how much of parenting is about caring for our own emotions, and we learn how to do that. This is what makes it possible to become a consequence "ninja." THEN we start expanding your repertoire and you're totally ready for it.
